Republic of Cyprus Residency Permit (Spouse)

A Republic of Cyprus temporary residence permit allows Non-EU / Third Country Passport holders married to a Cypriot Citizen the opportunity to apply and stay in the Republic for one year and can be renewed on an annual basis, this is dependent on the relevant criteria being met. This permit only applies if he or she does not have an existing Cypriot permit currently in place.

This allows children younger than 18 years of age (also from a previous marriage) and / or Parents in-law to make their own separate application, provided that the provisions for reunification are met.

    There are differing visitor categories for application as follows:

    • Autonomous visitor permit;
    • Dependent Spouse visitor;
    • Dependent minor child of visitor;
    • Dependent adult family member of 3rd country national;
    • Dependent partner with a duly proven permanent relationship for the purpose of marriage (This specific temporary residence permit is issued for a term of three months for Third Country Nationals that maintained a proven long-term relationship with a Cypriot citizen for at least one year but did not stay in the Republic of Cyprus for more than three months after the expiry of their visa.

    For the first application for a temporary residence permit, Third Country Nationals must enter the Republic as a visitor through a legal entry (Visa - Issued by the Diplomatic and Consular Authorities of the Republic - Ministry of Foreign Affairs). This combined with the presentation of a valid travel document requires an application to be made prior to the expiration of the Visa at the central offices of the Civil Registry and Migration Department or at the district branch of the Aliens Immigration office.

    The application process for the Third Country National requires documentation as follows:

    • A copy of a Valid Passport or travel document with at least three months from the date of application including the last arrival to the Republic and any relevant Visas;
    • Clear Criminal Record Certificate - this original document obtained from the country of residence or origin must be officially certified with translation in Greek or English;
    • Original medical examination certificate of blood tests stamped by a specialist doctor from the Republic of Cyprus that proves the TCN does not suffer from;
      • Hepatitis B and C;
      • HIV;
      • Syphilis;
      • Chest X-Ray for Tuberculosis.
    • An original letter of guarantee issued by a Bank or cooperative institution in Cyprus with validity of 10 years covering possible repatriation expenses in the name of the applicant from their own bank account;
    • Health insurance certificate for medical care that covers both inpatient and outpatient, this must cover transportation of a corpse;
    • Certified copy of the Title Deed or Tenancy agreement document in the name of the Cypriot Citizen;
    • Detailed Bank Statements for the supporting Cypriot Citizen with at least 12 months validity showing no less than €2,000 each month or €24,000 per year for one person. This figure increases by 20% for the spouse and an additional 15% for each child. It must be noted that at the time of application there can be no less than €6,000 which equates to three months of income;
    • Original Marriage Certificate certified and translated into Greek or English (where applicable).

There are two types of forms depending on whether the Third Country National wants / needs employment or not? The two categories are as below:

  1. Form MVIS2 relates to spouses that are able to reside in the Republic without employment, documentation as required:
    • Proof of income from abroad and the Republic via Bank Statements sufficient to live in Cyprus;
    • Health Insurance;
    • Original Marriage Certificate (If applicable) certified and translated into Greek or English (where applicable);
    • Certified copy of the Title Deeds or Tenancy agreement contract;
    • Copy of Valid Passport or travel document with at least three months from the date of application including the last arrival to the Republic and any relevant Visas;
    • Copy of the Third Party Nations ID Card - Translated into Greek or English;
    • Copy of the ID and Passport of the Cypriot Spouse;
    • An original letter of guarantee issued by a Bank or cooperative institution in Cyprus with validity of one year to cover potential costs.
  2. Form MCYE2 relates to spouses that want to apply for a working residence permit, the required documentation as listed below:
    • Proof of income from abroad and the Republic via Bank Statements sufficient to live in Cyprus;
    • Health Insurance;
    • Original Marriage Certificate (If applicable) certified and translated into Greek or English (where applicable);
    • Certified copy of the Title Deeds or Tenancy agreement contract;
    • Copy of Valid Passport or travel document with at least three months from the date of application including the last arrival to the Republic and any relevant Visas;
    • Copy of Third Country Nationals ID Card - Translated into Greek or English;
    • Copy of the ID and Passport of the Cypriot Spouse;
    • Official Declaration of the Employer or if self-employed this will need documenting;
      • Employer required to sign and acknowledge the application form;
      • Name of the Company or the Employer together with the Employers Registration number together with the VAT number (If applicable);
      • Address of employment - Street and street number, Area, City and Post Code;
      • Telephone, Fax and Email address of the Employer / Company;
      • Sector of employment and position offered;
      • Duration of the contract of employment, together with the monthly salary.
    • Social Insurance Registration and Certificate;
    • An original letter of guarantee issued by a Bank or cooperative institution in Cyprus with validity of one year to cover potential costs.

Parents of cypriot citizen

Cypriot Citizen Parent of Minor’s

Citizens of the Republic of Cyprus that have dependent Children under the age of 18 years are allowed to submit an application on their behalf, those aged 18 years and over can also apply.

The documents required to apply for a Consular Birth Certificate (Form M121) are listed below:

  • Birth certificate of the applicant -This must be officially translated into Greek or English and Apostilled (Certified);
  • Marriage certificate of the applicant’s parents (where applicable) - This must be officially translated into Greek or English and Apostilled (Certified);
  • Photocopy of the parent’s and applicant’s passport and Apostilled (Certified);
  • Certificate of registration of the Cypriot parent (where applicable);
  • Copy of receipt of fees paid;
  • Stamps with the required fees attached to the application.

An application for the Registration of Minors whose Mother or Father is a citizen of the Republic of Cyprus through marriage can apply via Form M126, documents required are listed below:

  • Birth certificate of the applicant - This must be officially translated into Greek or English and Apostilled (Certified);
  • Marriage certificate of the applicant’s parents (where applicable) - This must be officially translated into Greek or English and Apostilled (Certified);
  • Photocopy of the parent’s and applicant’s passport and Apostilled (Certified);
  • Certificate of acquisition of Cypriot Citizenship - Mother or Father;
  • Copy of receipt of fees paid;
  • Stamps with the required fees attached to the application;
  • Two passport- size photographs;
  • Declaration of the foreign parent via signature is required before an officer of the District Administration Office or the Diplomatic authority consents to the granting of the Cypriot Citizenship to a minor.

In addition to the above documentation, children of Cypriot Citizens that have acquired citizenship by Naturalization or Registration due to marriage with a Cypriot Citizen should attach the following information:

  • Certificate of Registration or Naturalization of the Cypriot parent;
  • Copy of school attendance;
  • Photocopy of valid temporary residence permit for the child.

Adults that have either parent as a citizen of the Republic of Cyprus above the age of 18 years can similarly make an application using Forms M71, M72, M123 or M124 (Depending on circumstances), the accompanying documents are the same as for minors under the age of 18 years (above).

Applications are accepted in all circumstances if parents have divorced, widowed or re-married, following information will need to be provided:

  • Date that the marriage was dissolved;
  • Place of issue of the relative Court Order or Judgment (Official document - Certified);
  • Date of widower’s death and relevant certificate (Official document - Certified);
  • Marriage certificate if the Cypriot parent has remarried.
