Cyprus Launches New Digital Residence Permit Renewal System: What Applicants Need to Know

Cyprus is taking another major step towards the digitalisation of its immigration system with the launch of a new online service for the renewal of certain residence permits held by third-country nationals.

Launched on 6 July 2026 by the Deputy Ministry of Migration and International Protection, in cooperation with the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, the new platform allows eligible applicants, employers and authorised representatives to submit residence permit renewal applications online rather than relying entirely on the traditional paper-based process.

Employees working for Companies of Foreign Interests can use the new system to renew eligible temporary residence permits, provided the application falls within the conditions of the digital service.

4. Family Reunification

The digital service also covers certain family reunification renewals.

At this stage, this specifically includes family members of:

5. Long-Term Residents

Residence permits held by Long-Term Residents can also be renewed through the new platform.

Physical presence will still be required where the procedure requires it, particularly for the collection of biometric data and signature.

And this is where expectations need to be realistic.

Cyprus has been progressively moving government services online for years, but users have also become familiar with another side of digital government: websites becoming unavailable, systems experiencing technical problems, login difficulties and services temporarily going offline.

In fact, the Migration Department itself announced a temporary unavailability of its electronic services on 10 July 2026, only days after the new residence permit renewal platform was launched, due to scheduled works.

That does not necessarily mean the new platform is unreliable. Scheduled maintenance is normal for any digital system.

But it highlights an important concern for immigration applicants: a technical problem cannot be treated the same way as an inconvenience when a residence permit is approaching expiry.
